Tigers fall to Pirates

Saturday, March 3, 2007

ST. LOUIS -- DePauw saw its hopes of advancing to the second round when Whitworth's Bryan Williams nailed a three pointer as time expired in overtime to lift Whitworth to its first ever win in the NCAA Division III tournament, as the Pirates defeated DePauw 62-59 at Washington University in St. Louis Friday night.

Austin Brown led DePauw in scoring with 15 points. Stephen Schott grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

In the first half, the Pirates held the Tigers to only 37 percent shooting but allowed the Tigers to hit six three pointers to stay close. Whitworth shot 60 percent from the field and took a 36-28 lead into the half.

DePauw had its chance as the Pirates turned to ice, scoring only two points over the first eight minutes of the second half and only five points over the first 12 minutes. But the Tigers could not capitalize. The Tigers got within two points twice before Whitworth finally got on track.

Mike Moore had a chance to win the game for DePauw with seven seconds left and his team trailing by one. He made the first, then missed, pushing the teams into overtime.

In overtime, Schott had a chance to ice the game but was only able to make 1-of-2 free throws and gave Whitworth the opportunity it needed. Williams received the pass on the elbow and drained the three as time expired, sending the Tigers home.

DePauw ends its season with a record of 22-6.
