BAINBRIDGE -- After a banner senior season, things only got better for North Putnam's Alyssa Simpson.

On Friday, Simpson signed to play golf at Marian College in Indianapolis.

"I'm looking forward to having teammates that are competitive," Simpson said. She was the only North Putnam golfer last season. "And being on a team."

Simpson advanced to the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Finals this past season. She was also a regional qualifier in 2004 and was the top Putnam County golfer this past year in addition to earning All-West Central Conference honors.

Marian coach Brett Cope said he's looking forward to having Simpson on the squad next season.

"She's going to add depth to the team," Cope said Friday. "She's very consistent. She strikes the ball and that's what you like to see.

"She has room for improvement, but they all do."

Simpson's decision to attend Marian was simple. She has aspirations of getting into the medical field and felt the school was the perfect fit for her.

"They have a really good nursing program," Simpson said. "And it's a small school.

"I want to get right into the working force right after (college)."

Simpson said she had wanted to be a doctor but after interning at Hendricks Regional Health in Danville, she set her sites on nursing.

Simpson's high school coach Keith Bodnarick said she will be a great addition for Marian in the fall.

"She's just a wonderful kid to work with," Bodnarick said. "Obviously she's talented and very disciplined. She can control her emotions on the course.

"She did a good job of coaching herself and working with me (last year). I think Marian got a real steal."

Bodnarick said Simpson's ability to hit the ball will help Marian.

"She hits the ball a long way," he said. "And she's got great body type for the game. I think Alyssa can step in immediately and make an impact."

Simpson also plays softball for the Cougars and was on the 2007 swim squad. She is the daughter of Charles and Kelley Simpson.
