GMS swimmers take two from South Putnam

GREENCASTLE -- The Greencastle Middle School boys and girls swim team closed its season with two dominating wins against the South Putnam Eagles at home Thursday night. The boys were victorious with a score of, 141-42, and the girls defeated the Eagles, 125-59.

Gaining wins for the boys were Renegade Vandiver in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:44.26 and the 400-yard freestyle in a time of 5:42.49, Walter Chiarella in the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:15.16, Jay Guffey won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.46, Jesse Elkins won the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 29.10, Spencer Moore in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:02.69 and the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:28.32, and Cody Watson in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:21.73.

Gaining relay wins for the Tiger Cubs were the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Guffey, Chiarella, Moore, Elkins finished first with a time of 4:45.64, the 200-yard free relay team of Jordan Phillips, Watson, Joey Cass, and Matthew Sims in a time of 2:13.69, and the 200-yard medley team of Moore, Guffey, Elkins, and Chiarella in a school record time of 2:03.37.

For the girls, Kayla McCalister got things going by winning the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:49.16.

Kelly Menzel won the 50-yard free in a time of 28.92, Sydney Terry won the 50-yard butterfly in a time of 32.50, Harriet Watson captured the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:16.70.

McCalister also won the 400-yard freestyle in 6:01.58. Sarah Beams gained the win in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:41.71 and Menzel grabbed first place in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The GMS girls also swept the relays, with the team of Alice Moore, Tess Handy, Katie Hedge, and Melanie Bittles winning the 400-yard freestyle in 5:28.17. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Handy, Terry, Watson, and Menzel finished first in 2:10.44, and the team of Menzel, Terry, Bittles and Watson captured the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:22.38.

NPMS splits with Cadets

At Bainbridge, the swimmers from North Putnam Middle School split with Cascade Thursday night at home with the boys' winning, 112-69 and the girls losing, 122-47.

The boys' grabbed nine first-place finishes, two of which are new school records.

Jeremy Ban won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:03.74 to break the old mark and the relay team of Ban, Mathew Shearer, Ben Huber, and Trevor Mitchener won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:58.03 for another school record.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Huber, Chris Baker, Ban and Justin Zurawski finishing first in a time of 2:17.78.

Ban kept things rolling by winning the 200-yard freestyle in 2:37.07. Shorter grabbed the top spot in the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:17.01 and the 50-yard backstroke in 35.56. Shearer son the 50-yard butterfly in 33.36.

Mitch Marlow, with a dive total of 109.90, took top honors in diving.

The girls' were unable to come away with a win, but walked away with two school records.

Caroline Byrd won the 400-yard freestyle in 5:54.38 to grab one of the records and the team of Shelly Harper, Halset Foltz, Molly Wilcox, and Valerie Scott scored a record in the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 2:14.00.

North grabbed two more second-place finishes with Byrd capturing the 100-yard freestyle in 1:14.65 and the relay team of Foltz, Scott, Byrd, and Cara Stanley won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 5:26.25.
