Clovers anticipate competitive spring
CLOVERDALE -- With 21 total golfers and nine seniors leading the way, the numbers indicate the outlook is positive for Cloverdale golf in 2007. The coach's comments back up those numbers.
"Everything has gone well so far," said Coach Doug Wokoun.
"We're pleased with where we are."
Where they are is returning an experienced top three in juniors Michael Glassburn and Sean Rhine and senior Kevin Gregg. Wokoun looks for these three to continue to consistently play well for him. Just as last season, however, it will be important to the Clovers to find the other scorers to round out the varsity lineup.
"Our key is to find a fourth and fifth scorer. It's going to be tight, and the fourth and sometimes the fifth score are going to make the difference," Wokoun said.
Among those trying to fill out the lineup will be eight other seniors in Andrew Cofer, Chris Gary, Justin Hacker, Thomas Maynard, Jeff McMillan, Jake Secrest, Ben Unger and Josh Welty. Add to these two more juniors, two sophomores and six freshmen, and the stable is deep for the Clovers. Throughout the classes, the coach has been happy with the effort and improvement he has seen this spring.
"We have been very pleased with what we've been able to do. We have six freshmen, and we are pleased with their progress so far," said Wokoun.
"For the most part, we have people making improvements and doing what they didn't start out doing well."
Proper execution will be important for the Clovers since the coach foresees a high level of competition in both the county and the conference in 2007.
"Everybody in the county is loaded this year," he said. "We have an awful lot of good high school golfers.
"It's going to be exciting."
With everyone playing at such a high level, Wokoun knows his team will have to bring it's best game to every match. He said they cannot "just show up" and expect to win.
"It's going to be really tough, and whoever has a good day or whoever is consistent is going to win."
Besides the county and conference, Wokoun is excited about the level of teams across the board on the Clovers' schedule. He knows every night will be a challenge.
"Every time you go out, you're going to be looking at an opponent who is as good as you are or better," he said. The next step will be figuring out how to beat him.
While Wokoun knows it won't be an easy spring for the Clovers, he is ready for the challenge.
"It's going to be a very competitive spring," he said.
The Clovers open their season at 4:45 p.m. April 9, when they travel to West Vigo.
