Staff reports

The Greencastle girl's softball team lost its first game of the season Monday night against county rival North Putnam, 11-1 and now hopes to return the favor tonight on the road.

"The tone was set early," GHS coach Dave Keller said.

Leah Crosby smacked a double to score three runs in the top of the first inning with two outs on the board.

Greencastle looked as if it would return the favor, having runners on second and third with nobody out. But good defense by the Cougars, left the GHS runners stranded.

"If we could have gotten out of that inning, things would be different," Keller said.

North jumped out to a 5-0 lead, when Greencastle scored in the bottom of the third. Unfortunately for Greencastle, that would be its only run.

The Cougars piled on two runs in the top of the fourth and a blew it open with a four-run final inning to grab the win.

For Greencastle, Cassie Alspaugh, Tabitha Wilson and Sarah Land all had hits for the Tiger Cubs.

Chelsea Greene led the Cougars with two hits while Alyssa Simpson, Cheryl Mitchel, and Crosby all came through with hits.

Brook Miller tossed for 13 strikeouts with three walks to grab the win.

Greencastle and North Putnam will face off again tonight at 4:30 p.m. at North Putnam.
