Tiger softball splits a twinbill

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- DePauw softball dropped the opening game of its doubleheader at Illinois Wesleyan, 2-1, but came back with a 10-4 win in the nightcap. The Tigers are 20-2, while the Titans are now 11-5.

The first game held at a scoreless tie through seven innings, with DePauw going hitless for 6 2/3 innings. The tiebreaker rule was put in place in the top of the eighth, and Annie Morgan entered the game as a pinch-runner on second base. Carolyn Bartlett's sacrifice bunt advanced Morgan to third, and she scored on Jessica Bowlds' sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the eighth, Kayla Kindred was placed on base for the Titans. She advanced to third on Monica Urban's sacrifice bunt. Molly Coers walked and stole second, and Laura Johnson hit a game-winning two-run single.

Lauren Hyland improved to 7-2 with the one-hitter, as she struck out six and walked one. Megan Soultz fell to 8-2, allowing six hits while recording seven strikeouts and one walk. Rachel Gill had DePauw's only hit, while Johnson had two of the Titans' six.

In the second game, DePauw took a 2-0 lead in the second on Bartlett's home run. In the third, a Jessica Krueger RBI single, a Lauren Reese two-run double and a Bartlett sacrifice fly made it 6-0. The Tigers added two more in the third on Titan errors.

Illinois Wesleyan scored two in the bottom of the third with Ashley Deck's two-run single. Gill's run-scoring single in the fourth made it 9-2. The Titans scored one each in the fifth and seventh, and the Tigers scored one in the seventh.

Lauren Curosh improved her record to 8-0, allowing seven hits. Valerie Hackett dropped to 3-2. DePauw collected 10 hits, with Krueger, Rees, Bartlett and Laura Schlensker each finishing with two. Seven different Titans each had one hit.

DePauw opens SCAC play on Friday, hosting Centre in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
