BRAZIL -- The Greencastle boys' golf team started its season with a sixth-place finish in the Northview Invitational Saturday.

"Our score wasn't very good, but I've been in this situation with young teams before," GHS coach Donavan Wheeler said. "This was encouraging because we were only one to one-and-a-half scores away from being in the upper half."

Greencastle scored a total of 345 points to finish just ahead of Turkey Run.

For Greencastle, David Lilly scored a 38 on the front nine but scored a 43 on the back nine, ending with four straight bogeys.

"David's round was solid. He was pretty disappointed with his back nine. He felt like he was in a position to build on his 38," Wheeler said.

Wheeler acknowledged that Lilly had a bad taste in his mouth after the back nine but he liked what he saw.

"I think he should be proud of how he battled through the day," Wheeler said.

He was followed by Nick Pritchard with a solid 41-42 for a total of 83. Jacob Collins put up an 86 for the Tiger Cubs.

Luke Crimmins and Ryan Young recorded a 95 each and Wade Huber rounded out Greencastle's scoring with a 96.

"Both Luke and Wade are capable of going much lower," Wheeler said.

"Ninty-nine out of 100 times, I'm going to say that the weather is never an excuse, but this was pretty extreme," commented Wheeler. "It became a huge distraction. However, the weather was the same for everyone else, and the better teams clearly didn't let it get to them as much as we did."

Wheeler believes that as soon as the team plays to its potential, they will start to see some good things happen.

"When we start handling ourselves better mentally, then we can take advantage of the abilities that we have," he said. "Hopefully, we can hit a day when four of them play to their potential. Then, when they see how much better they can be, we can all build something off of that."

Greencastle will hit the links again Thursday at home against West Vigo at 4:30 p.m.
