Mary K. Deem, 83, Greencastle, died Monday.

Born in Belle Union, she was the daughter of Cecil R. and Zelma G. (Fisher) Phillips.

A 1941 graduate of Belle Union High School, she was a 1947 graduate of Approved University of Beauty College. She had been employed as a long distance operator for Indiana Bell Telephone and had owned and operated a beauty shop in Greencastle. She and her husband were the former owners of Deem's Steak house and Lincoln Restaurant. She was a member of Hanna Street Baptist Church, VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary.

She married Virgil R. Deem, who preceded her in death.

Surviving are son Gary R. Deem and wife Cynthia, Danville, Ill.; brother Charles M. Phillips and wife Dorothy D., Omaha, Neb.; sister Dorothy D. Vaughan and husband Grover, Greencastle; two stepgrandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Leon R. Phillips, sisters Laverne M. Wells and Hildred B. Phillips, and stepdaughter Barbara A. Connor.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Patrick Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday, and noon until service time Saturday.
