BAINBRIDGE -- The North Putnam Cougars' softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday night to run-rule Cloverdale, 10-0.

The Cougars jumped out quick and scored four runs in the first inning and two in the second.

Dakota Malayer smacked a double to center field to score two runs and scored herself two batters later as Leah Crosby brought her home.

"We came out the first inning and scored four runs, hit the ball pretty decent," North coach George Pearson commented. "Our eyes got a little too big and tried to hit too many out."

Cloverdale turned around and had two hits in the first coming from Hannah Monnett and Martika Byrd. But that would be it for the Clovers.

After the first inning, no Clover touched a base nor the ball. Simply said, the Clovers never found their groove.

Although walking seven and striking out only one, Jennifer Wiley pitched a good game. She held the Cougars to no runs and one hit over the course of the third and fourth innings. She was backed up with good defense in the outfield by Stephanie Tutterow in center field.

Cloverdale coach Greg Crum saw one area that concerned him and pointed directly at it as a factor in the game.

"We could have had a lot more effort that what we did tonight," he said. "The last two games are not characteristic of our team, but we have not been playing with enthusiasm."

The Cougars needed only four runs to shut down the game early, when Pearson brought in some players off the bench.

Sarah Crosby got North's first hit of the inning and Cheryl Mitchel drew a walk to put two runners on. Then Carlye McGaughey came to the plate and smacked a double off the left field wall to score a couple of runs. Chelsea Greene hit a shot to left-center field to get on base.

After a runner scored on a Brook Miller fly, Malayer came to the plate.

Malayer crashed the first pitch she saw to right field to score Greene and win the game.

"We put three subs in there and they got a walk, a hit and got people on base, starting a big inning for us," Pearson said. "I was pretty happy with them."

Miller pitched a complete game, recording three strikeouts, two hits and no walks.

"She did real well. She pitched like a pitcher and didn't try to strike everybody out," Pearson responded. "She was pretty tough."
