GHS jumps on Tri-West early
Greencastle baseball hit the ball early and often Friday night, taking care of Tri-West by the ten-run-rule, 13-1, in five innings. It was the Tiger Cubs' fourth straight win, moving them to 4-2 on the season.
Austin Miller (1-0) saw his first pitching action of the season, and gave a solid performance for his first appearance. In four innings, Miller allowed four hits, three walks and one earned run. He struck out two Bruin batters.
"It was good to get Austin some innings," coach Troy Greenlee said.
After the Bruins left two stranded in scoring position in the top of the first, Greencastle came out swinging. The first five batters reached base for Greencastle. The Tiger Cubs hit single after single, and continued to drive in runs on Tri-West starter Tyler Smith.
Smith lasted only two thirds of an inning, allowing seven runs on six hits and a walk. Reliever Logan Bowman came in from center field and fared slightly better, but most of the damage was done. With such a fast start, Greenlee was pleased with the way his team continued to play hard even after they built a big lead.
"I was proud of how our kids kept playing," he said.
"Our hitting is getting where we want it to be. I feel like we can send nine guys to the plate who can hit the ball," Greenlee said.
Balance was the theme of the night, as eight different Tiger Cubs picked up hits. Leading the way was Michael Richardson, who went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Five other Tiger Cubs collected two hits each.
Additionally, seven Tiger Cubs drove in runs, led by Derrick Patterson with four. Richardson, Kendall Faust and Zac Remsburg each collected two RBI.
While balance may have been key, the Tiger Cubs also got the production every team expects from the top of the order. Remsburg and Richardson did exactly what the top two in an order should do -- they reached base and then ran. The duo was a combined 5-for-6, reaching base a total of seven times. Once they got on, they ran, with Richardson stealing three bases and Remsburg, two. Each one also scored twice.
The victory completes a week with which the coach is very pleased. Winless coming into the week, the Tiger Cubs are now 4-2. Wins over Cascade last Monday and Tuesday got them to .500 in conference. They return to WCC play with two against Speedway in the coming week.
The Tiger Cubs host the Sparkplugs at 5 p.m. Monday, then travel to Speedway at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
"Those are a couple of big conference games four us," said Greenlee.
