Patterson breaks 30-year-old record as both GHS teams finish second

Wednesday, April 25, 2007
Greencastle pole vaulter Nick Walkosak clears the 10 feet mark, a height that placed him second.

The Greencastle boys' and girls' track team both fell to the Terre Haute North Patriots at home Tuesday night. The boys' fell 97-49 to the Patriots, while the girls were defeated 80-74 in a close meet.

Even with the defeat, both Greencastle squads experienced multiple personal bests on the night, with one setting a school record.

Jamie Patterson came to the line in the 100 meter dash and proceeded to dominate her competition en route to capturing the school record in the event.

Patterson recorded an 11.9, eclipsing the old mark of 11.92, set by Rita Taylor. The record had stood for 30 years. Coach Garry Anderson couldn't hide his pride when talking about his record-setting sprinter.

"I told myself when I saw that record when I got here, the girl that breaks that record, I'd give her a hug," Anderson said. "And I did tonight."

Patterson was one of many Tiger Cubs to tear up the track. Greencastle captured eight events on the night.

Erica Soster won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.7, Hannah Serlin captured the 800 meter run in 2:29.9 and Laura Weatherford edged out her West Vigo opponent in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 1:00.4.

In addition to 100 meter dash, Patterson also won the 200 meter dash in a time of 26.1. Bethany Schroeder distanced her competition in the long jump, leaping 16'.25".

Greencastle also won the 400 meter relay in a time of 49.7, which tied the stadium record, and the 1,600 meter in a time of 4:16.5.

"My girls performed well," Anderson said. "We had a lot of personal bests."

For the boys, Andy Weatherford continued his assault on the asphalt, as he captured two of Greencastle's three wins on the night.

"We had a lot of personal bests," GHS coach Mike Schimpf said.

Weatherford finished the 1,600 meter run in a time of 4:26.6 and finished ahead of the pack to capture the 800 meter run in 1:57.4.

"Andy was just three-tenths of a second away from a stadium record again," Schimpf noted.

Joel Bottom captured the long jump with a distance of 20'1.5" for the Tiger Cubs.

"I'm pretty happy overall. It's hard to be really happy when you get beat. People weren't giving up on me. People worked really hard," Schimpf commented.

The Tiger Cubs will be on the road against Northview and Edgewood Monday at 5 p.m.
