Wednesday, May 2, 2007

A Greencastle couple suffered serious injuries in an early Wednesday crash on West Walnut Street Road and were airlifted to Indianapolis hospitals.

Deputy Ed Wilson reported that Gary E. Fleming, 39, and Wanda S. Fleming, 39, both of 311 W. Columbia St., Greencastle, received multiple injuries in the 2:31 a.m. crash near CR 200 West.

Wilson reported that Gary Fleming was driving east when he lost control of the 2004 Mazda in a curve, overcorrected, and struck a ditch and a fence owned by Larry Gottschalk.

The car rolled four to five times before coming to rest on its top about 357 feet from where it left the road.

The driver told medical personnel he was driving "way too fast" and lost control of the car. He was airlifted via LifeLine helicopter to Methodist Hospital with a partially severed right hand and head injuries.

The passenger was airlifted to Wishard Memorial Hospital via Air Evac helicopter with a partially severed right hand and injuries to her lower legs.

Blood-alcohol tests were pending, Wilson reported.

He was assisted at the scene by Sgt. Tom Helmer and Greencastle Officer Eric Vaughan, Greencastle firefighters and Operation Life ambulance personnel.

Damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.
