GHS golf downs North and Crawfordsville

Greencastle's Luke Crimmins sizes up a putt Tuesday night at Windy Hill. Crimmins finished with 41 in the Tiger Cubs' victory over North Putnam and Crawfordsville.

Tuesday night saw the Greencastle boys' golf team defeat North Putnam and Crawfordsville at home to run its record to 6-1 on the season. The Tiger Cubs shot a 158, while North Putnam came in second with a 172 and Crawfordsville was third with 184.

Greencastle's average score of 39.5 was hard to beat, but the Cougars and Athenians gave them all they had.

"I feel really fortunate," GHS coach Donovan Wheeler said. "I feel fortunate that Dr. Jekyll showed up and not Mr. Hyde."

Greencastle has had some up and down scores on the year, but with a young squad looking to gain more confidence, Wheeler knows how huge Tuesday's win was.

"We needed this, we really needed this," Wheeler commented. "Our confidence was starting to sag. We were really starting to doubt some things."

David Lilly led GHS with a 35 and took medalist honors, while Nick Pritchard came in under 40, with a 39. Luke Crimmins posted a 41 and Jacob Collins rounded out Greencastle's scoring with a 43 to give the Tiger Cubs the victory.

North Putnam was led by Patrick Byrd's 40. He was followed by J.J. Burns with a 42. Austin Malayer and Jeremy Redman both shot a 45 to put the Cougars in second place.

"It's disappointing," NPHS coach Keith Bodnarick said. "Donovan always does a really good job of getting his kids prepared. Obviously he had his kids a lot better prepared than I did."

While gaining the win, Wheeler felt the Tiger Cubs gave away too many shots, especially on the greens.

"We'll be on the putting green all day tomorrow," Wheeler said. "We bled shots all over the place."

Even with his disappointment on the greens, Wheeler liked what he saw as he witnessed his team attacking the course.

"It was nice to see them play a little more deliberate and nice to see them just get some breaks and opportunities go their way," Wheeler commented.

Both Wheeler and Bodnarick commented on the good conditions of the course, but Wheeler also acknowledged Greencastle's home course advantage.

"Windy Hill did its job today," he said
