Katherine Ruth (Albin) Alter, 85, formerly of Richmond, died April 21 in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Born in Greencastle, she was the daughter of Paul and Ethel Albin.

She married Harry Alter of Fillmore, who preceded her in death in 1962.

The couple moved to Richmond during World War II. She volunteered as a Gray Lady at Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond for many years. She moved to California in 1978.

Surviving are five children, Barbara Alter, Livingston, Texas, Frank Alter and wife Suzanne, Richmond, Diane Porfidio and husband David, Forest Lake, Minn., Katy Kneier and husband Andy, Nevada City, Calif., and Harry "Skip" Alter and wife Debbie, Granville, Ohio; sister Edna Mae Albin Priest, Crawfordsville; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parens, husband, and brothers Wilmer and Clair Albin.

A celebration of life is planned this summer.
