Burns leads Cougars to tournament victory

COVINGTON -- North Putnam defended its title at the Covington Invitational Saturday, finishing five strokes ahead of host Covington with a 317. South Putnam also participated and finished in seventh-place on the day with 362 total.

J.J. Burns led the way for the Cougars with a 72 and received medalist honors. He was followed by Eric Whitaker and Patrick Byrd both with 81. Austin Malayer finished with an 83 and Jeremy Redman shot a 95.

For South, Tyler Newby scored a team-low 79, while Jon Weaver shot a 91. Ben Anderson and Cory Welty shot 96 each and Trea Boyce shot a 99.

Next Match -- North will travel to Danville today at 4:30 p.m., while South Putnam will travel to Monrovia to face the Bulldogs and Owen Valley in a three-way match.
