GHS tennis defeats Owen Valley

The Greencastle girls' tennis team picked up a 3-2 victory over Owen Valley by its No. 2 doubles team in dramatic fashion, Monday

"This was a great win," Tiger Cub coach Trish Lowe said.

Greencastle saw the match knotted at 2-all after some great play from its No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.

No. 1 singles player Kelsey Hennette defeated Owen Valley's Jordyn Henson in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. Hennette mixed baseline hitting with good net work to gain the win.

The doubles team of Kayla Birt and Savannah Provine crushed their opponents in straight sets as well, defeating Beth Booher and Lauren Goddard 6-0, 6-1.

"I am pleased with the play of Hennette, Birt and Provine," Lowe said. "They know what to do and they just do it."

Owen Valley battled with the Tiger Cubs winning the No. 2 singles and also the No. 3 singles contests.

In the No. 2 contest, Rena Warren was defeated by Adrian Gillaspy 2-6, 2-6, while No. 3 singles player Aubrey Merrell fell to the Patriots' Nicole Duling 1-6, 1-6.

With the match tied, it all fell on the No. 2 doubles team of Emma Kaiser and Kristen Flint. Kaiser and Flint won their first set 6-4 but suffered a sound loss in the second set 1-6. With one set remaining, Kaiser and Flint dismantled Lexi Carmichael and Elizabeth Schenck, grabbing a 6-4 third set win and giving the Tiger Cubs the victory.

"They struggled through a three-set match and came out on top," Lowe commented.

In junior varsity action, Greencastle won 3-1, as Kate Babington won singles and Rachel Jackson, Briana Martin, Jordan Karch and Katie Collins all combined to win doubles events.

Greencastle will host the Danville Warriors tonight at 4:30 p.m.

Eagles defeat Wildcats

South Putnam tennis hosted South Vermillion makeup match Wednesday evening. The Eagles got the better of the Wildcats, 3-2.

Coach Johnnie Briones called it "an absolute team win." The Eagles are 5-3 on the year.

Whitney Warren was the lone singles winner, claiming victory at the number two position, 7-6, 6-4. She bounced back well from her first loss of the season on Monday. Warren moved her record to 7-1.

The other two wins came from the doubles teams. Number one doubles, Chelsea Clark and Sam Callahan, won 6-0, 7-5. The number two team of Megan Criss and Cassie Davis claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

The junior varsity also played well, defeating South Vermillion, 6-2.

The Eagles are back in action tonight when they host Owen Valley at 4:30 p.m.
