Eagles top Patriots

The South Putnam High School tennis squad managed to eke out a 3-2 home win over Owen Valley Thursday.

"This was a good win against a good team," SPHS coach Johnnie Briones said.

The Eagles picked up wins at both varsity doubles spots, but lost at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.

However, Liz Mink knocked off Nicole Duling at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4, to preserve the win.

"Liz hung on to get the win and seal the team win," Briones said.

At No. 1 doubles, South Putnam's tandem of Chelsea Clark and Sam Callahan defeated Beth Booher and Stephanie Stutsman, 6-2, 6-1, while the Eagles' No. 2 duo of Megan Criss and Cassie Davis beat Lexi Carmichael and Elizabeth Shenck, 6-3, 6-0.

In junior varsity action, South Putnam earned a 3-1 win. Kaila Kirkman won at No. 1 singles while the SPHS duo of Ashley Ross and Megan Klotz won at No. 1 doubles. In addition, South Putnam's No. 2 tandem of Abby Trauner and Jesica Minor also won.

South Putnam will face Danville at home Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Tiger Cubs earn shutout

At Greencastle Thurs-day, the Tiger Cubs picked up a 5-0 win over Danville.

"This was such a close match for a 5-0 score," GHS coach Trish Lowe said. "All three singles matches went three sets. I was so proud of the girls to hang tough and win."

At No. 1 singles, Kelsey Hennette defeated Lauren Carroll, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, while Greencastle's No. 2 Rena Warren beat Anne Baenzinger, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. At No. 3 singles, Carol Lafoe beat Megan Dodson, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10-8).

In doubles play, Greencastle's No. 1 team of Kayla Birt and Savannah Provine beat Missy Hammersley and Amber Reyers, 6-1, 6-1, while the No. 2 tandem of Emma Kaiser and Kristen Flint beat Whitney Baenzinger and Lauren Clark, 7-5, 6-4.

Greencastle's junior varsity also won, 6-3.

The Tiger Cubs (8-2, 6-4-1) face Turkey Run at home Tuesday.
