Man dies in Saturday morning crash

Monday, May 14, 2007

A Greencastle man was killed in a single-vehicle accident early Saturday on U.S. 231 north of Cloverdale.

Joseph Allen Bumgardner, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputy Gregg Slover reported that Bumgardner was the only occupant of a southbound Ford 150 pickup truck that went off the road just north of County Road 700 South. The truck hit a culvert and the front right wheel came off the truck, causing it to roll.

Slover reported that Bumgardner was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the truck. He stated that speed was not a factor in the crash, and alcohol was not suspected. The Putnam County Coroner's Office is investigating the cause of death, and an autopsy will be performed. Slover stated there were no witnesses to the accident, but it is possible that Bumgardner fell asleep at the wheel.

Funeral arrangements for Bumgardner are pending at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle.
