The South Putnam girls' tennis team edged Danville Monday night, 3-2, at home in dramatic fashion.
"Another great win, against a very good team," South Putnam coach Johnnie Briones said.
Monday was senior night for South Putnam but for Shelley Douglass, South's only senior, it was a tough night. Douglass, the Eagles No. 1 singles player, dropped her match with Lauren Carrell 3-6, 2-6 and Briones felt from his senior.
"I wish No. 1 singles, Shelley Douglass, could have come out on top on senior night," Briones said. "But as always, she gave 110 percent against a very good opponent."
South also suffered a loss in the No. 3 singles slot as Elizabeth Minks fell to Megan Dodson 2-6, 2-6.
South's No. 2 singles player, Whitney Warren, fought back from a second set loss and grabbed the win with a decisive 6-2 win in the final set. Warren defeated Anne Baenziger 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Having lost both the No.1 singles and No. 3 singles matches, South looked to its doubles team for the win.
The No. 1 doubles team of Chelsea Clark and Samantha Callahan breezed past Danville's Missy Hammersley and Amber Reyes 6-2, 6-2.
With the matched knotted at 2-all, South held its breath as the No. 2 doubles team of Megan Criss and Cassie Davis dropped its first set 2-6. Criss and Davis charged back to tie the match with a 6-4 second set. Criss and Davis continued their good play and won the final set 6-2 to give South Putnam the win.
South also won the junior varsity match by an 8-1 count.
South Putnam will finish its regular season as it travels to Rockville tonight at 4:30 p.m.
