MARTINSVILLE -- The North Putnam golf team played its regular-season finale at Martinsville Golf Club Thursday, defeating the homestanding Artesians, 308-317, in an 18-hole match. The Cougars final dual match record was 15-2.

The 308 broke the 18-hole school record the team set earlier this season at the WCC.

J.J. Burns was medalist with a one-over 72. Eric Whitaker shot a 75. Jeremy Redman and Patrick Byrd rounded out the scoring with 80 and 81, respectively. Austin Malayers shot an 88, while Kyle Smith had a 95.

Martinsville was led by the 76 of Dave Porter.

"This was a matchup between two of the favorites to advance out of the sectional, so it was encouraging to see us play well at the sectional site," North Putnam coach Keith Bodnarick said.

"With Avon and Plainfield being state-ranked and likely finishing one-two Monday, it's going to be a dog fight for the final spot," he added. "There's probably four or five teams that are capable of advancing, and we're doing everything we can to mentally prepare ourselves. The win last night was our first step in that preparation."

The Cougars will be back at Martinsville at 9:30 a.m. Monday for sectional play.
