George F. Stewart, 77, Greencastle, died Saturday.

Born in Sullivan, he was the son of Dustin and Agnes (Headley) Stewart.

He moved with his family to Greencastle in 1939 from Dugger. He was a graduate of Greencastle High School Class of 1947 and had served on the class of 1947 alumni committee. He was also a graduate of Indiana State University.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served with the 17th Signal Battalion as a cryptographer during the Korean War. He retired from J.C. Penney after 30 years, managing stores in Mt. Carmel, Ill., Rolla, Mo., Belleville, Ill., and Newton, Iowa. His second career was with Tri-Tel Communications as a Territorial Manager in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was a member of First Christian Church in Greencastle, Greencastle Elks, Greencastle Moose, Windy Hill Country Club and the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Fauneil; two children, Beth Stewart Barrett and husband Jim, St. Louis, and Doug Stewart and companion Diane Share, Columbus; and two grandchildren.

His parents and sister, June Grimes preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Ross Walters officiating.

Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today (Monday) at the funeral home.
