Tuesday, July 24, 2007

The inaugural National Night Out, sponsored by Putnam County's Police and Community Partnerships is scheduled for 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7 at Robe-Ann Park.

The National Association of Town Watch, a nonprofit crime prevention organization, developed this national event in 1984. In 2006 more than 35 million people in more than 11,000 communities nationwide were involved. For this first year, the organizers are pleased more than 25 organizations are planning to participate.

Volunteers have been working since early spring to coordinate this first time local event.

"We are targeting families with elementary and middle school age children," said Greencastle assistant police chief Brian Hopkins. "There will be plenty of activities, demonstrations, food, and entertainment. Local churches are providing free refreshments including hot dogs, soft drinks, and popcorn."

A complete listing of participating agencies will be announced. Everyone is invited to attend the event.
