The Greencastle Lady Tiger Cubs soccer team defended its home field Monday evening, defeating Crawfordsville 2-1 on Dee Monnett Soccer Field.

The game started in the rain after storms had passed by. However, less than five minutes into the action, lightning struck again. After observing the 30 minute wait required by the IHSAA, the game resumed.

The first half saw no scoring, with most of the action taking place on the Athenians' side of the field.

The second half started with the understanding the game could be called due to weather, so both teams played hard.

About 10 minutes into the half, GHS goalie Micki Ehrhardt defended a shot on goal from the Athenians, but another player deflected it into the net, giving Crawfordsville a 1-0 lead.

The teams continued to battle, with Greencastle dominating the passing game and having the most shots on goal.

With 4:30 remaining, the Tiger Cubs finally broke through. Grace Fisher's shot on goal was defended by the Crawfordsville goalie, but she did not control the ball. Laura English and Hannah Spencer were both in the area, and the Tiger Cubs put the rebound through to even the score at one.

Thirty seconds later, GHS continued the scoring when Spencer scored on an assist from English.

With a 2-1 lead and less than four minutes remaining, the Tiger Cub defense took over, with Becky Grivas, Samantha Sillery and Hannah Deer in the back, along with strong efforts from the mid field.

GHS had 11 shots on goal, and Ehrhardt collected five saves.

Greencastle is back in action Thursday evening when it hosts Plainfield. The junior varsity game is at 5 p.m., followed by varsity at 6:30 p.m.
