Savahannah Lien thinks there are a lack of good role models for young women nowadays.

As a law school-bound, volunteer-minded woman who was raised in a small city, she thinks she can help fill that void, the 21-year-old Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis senior said.

Lien, a 2004 Greencastle High School graduate, is competing in the Miss Indiana USA competition in November in Merrillville, Ind. The winner of the pageant goes on to compete in the Miss USA pageant. Miss USA will compete in the global Miss Universe competition.

"More than anything, I hope that I am Miss Universe so that I can be a good, moral role model," she said.

Lien, who has never competed in a beauty pageant before, said has been working out a lot to prepare for the competition.

She will stress morality and the importance of community service at the pageant, she said.

Lien is currently looking for local sponsors to help cover the costs of the pageant, including a $1,000 registration fee. Anyone interested can contact her at slien@iupui.edu.
