Greencastle suffers overtime loss

Saturday, September 1, 2007

On one of the prettiest evening of the year so far the Greencastle Tiger Cubs traveled to the south to invade the home field of the Edgewood Mustangs hoping to pick up their first win of the year at the Mustangs expense. But tonight that would not happen as the Mustangs squeeze out the win 27-20 in overtime.

After an Edgewood punt, the Tiger Cubs got the ball in great field position at the 49-yard line of the Mustangs. QB Jordan Hickam handed the ball off on first down to Drew Evans for a gain of 8 yards. On the next snap Hickam would hand the ball to Kendall Faust who would blast through the line getting stopped at the 19 yard line only to get the ball stripped giving the ball back to Edgewood. Edgewood would start their second series from deep in there own territory.

Collier would keep the ball himself on 2 QB sweeps around the left side of the Tiger Cub Defense for a total of 43 yards for the QB the Defense tightened up. As Collier on 3rd down was sacked for a 22 yard loss bringing up 4th and 27 sending the punting team on the field.

Greencastle's offense would not get things rolling as they went four and out giving the ball back to the Mustangs. Edgewood's Offense would be shut down by the purple D on its next series going four and out themselves.

After getting the ball back Greencastle would start its offense from its own 30-yard line. A quick pass to Evans would pick up nine yards and a QB keep would net 5 more giving the Tiger Cubs 1st down and momentum. A handoff to Faust would spring him for 30 yards and the Tiger Cubs were deep in Edgewood territory. The Edgewood Defense would hold them to a field goal attempt by Deer that would be good and the Tiger Cubs would score first going up 3-0.

After Deer's Kick the Purple D would hold again forcing a four and out by Edgewood. Greencastle would start its offense from its own 49 with a little over four minutes to go. A handoff to Faust would pick up a quick seven yards A delay of game against the Tiger Cubs a couple plays later would bring Deer out for another FG attempt from 32 yards out. An offside against Edgewood would put Deer closer and he would nail the 27-yard attempt putting the Tiger Cubs up 6-0 with 41.3 seconds in the half.

Greencastle would receive the ball in the second half but on the kickoff the Mustangs would try the onside kick to see if they could catch the Cubs sleeping. Greencastle recovered the ball and was in great field position to start the second half. On first down, Hickam would hand off to Evans who took it up the middle and broke it to the outside down the sidelines for a touchdown. Deer would make it 7 with the PAT attempt. Greencastle had a 13-0 lead at this point.

After another Edgewood punt, Greencastle would start its offense on its own 24 a handoff to Faust for a gain of 2 and a pass to him on the next down in the flat would bring a personal foul penalty against Edgewood giving Greencastle a first down. Hickam would hit Evans with a pass that would put the Tiger Cubs on the Edgewood 48. Hickam would run a sweep on the next play keeping it himself and picking up 18 yards on the carry. The Tiger Cubs were moving the ball when the Tiger Cubs fumbled the ball again. They maintained possession but it forced a 35-yard FG attempt by Deer that went wide right.

Edgewood's offense would come to life the next series, as Collier would go to the air. After a couple receptions by Haydon Dumond Collier hit Jarrod Ferguson who took the ball to the Tiger Cub 31 yard line. Collier was not done he hit Jonathan Ellett with a 15-yard strike then again for a 10-yard pass. Collier would do it himself as he scrambled 5 yards for a touch down. Greencastle blocked the FG attempt and the score was 13-6. After the kickoff Greencastle's offense would takeover at their 35-yard line. After a handoff and loss of yardage Hickam went to the air but it was Edgewood's Jonathan Ellett that would pick off the Hickam pass giving it back to Edgewood. The Mustangs would not be able to capitalize and would punt the ball back to Greencastle but on the first play from scrimmage Greencastle would fumble and Edgewood recovered. It took Edgewood five plays from scrimmage to get back into the Greencastle end zone. They would go for two and would come up short making the score 13-12 Greencastle with 8:00 min to go in the game.

The kickoff to Greencastle would see them fumble again giving it back to Edgewood who would score again and convert the 2pt conversion. With Greencastle now down 20-13 they would get the ball back with 3:18 seconds to go. On second down Hickam would carry the ball around the left side for a gain of seven but as he was hit would hurt his arm and not get up. Graham Shuee would come into the game hit his next 5 passes ending with a pass to Evans in the end zone for a TD. The teams were knotted 20-20 with 48 seconds in the 4th.

It would stay that way until OT. Greencastle won the toss elected to defend first. Each team got 4 shots to score from the 10-yard line. Collier would hit Dumond on the first play for a TD PAT was good. Greencastle could not find an open receiver on its 4 downs and coming up just short losing to Edgewood 27-20

After the Game Coach Meyer was very disappointed and said his kids played hard and they were hurting after this loss.
