Downtown light poles being relocated

Wednesday, September 12, 2007

Downtown Greencastle was abuzz with activity Tuesday night as crews from Midwestern Electric erected new poles for highway signs on the south and west sides of the courthouse.

The current poles obstruct a portion of the sidewalk and pedestrians making their way to the courthouse via the cross walk, project foreman Jason Goodwin said.

The new poles, with an average height of about 30 feet, stand a few feet away from the existing poles. The work was expected to be completed Tuesday night.

INDOT officials initiated the project this spring but ran into problems with bedrock when digging holes for the new poles, which delayed the work for some time. An INDOT official said Tuesday that they made some adjustments are were able to resume the project.

Moving the poles further from the corner of the intersection also helps large trucks and semi-tractor trailers that pass through the area on a daily basis.
