Tiger Cubs run wild on Cadets, 36-7

Saturday, October 6, 2007

CLAYTON -- The Greencastle football team traveled to Cascade Friday night and literally ran all over the Cadets, ultimately winning the contest 36-7.

Kendall Faust (24) gets out in front to block for Drew Evens. The senior duo combined to rush for 329 yards and three touchdowns.

"We made mistakes and we had some missed opportunities, but I'm very pleased with a good win," GHS head coach Mike Meyer said. "We ran the ball, we made some nice plays, and we did some nice things."

The Tiger Cubs started the game strong, scoring on the first two drives of the game.

Greencastle's first scoring drive on the night blended Kendall Faust and Drew Evens rushes with two Graham Shuee passes, capped by a 25-yard touchdown run by Evens.

The Tiger Cub defense gave the offense another shot deep in Cascade territory after Andrew Birt intercepted a Conner Guthrie pass.

On their second possession, Greencastle took only two plays to find the end zone once again as Evens took the ball in from six-yards out, giving the Tiger Cubs a 13-0 lead after a Buzz Deer missed point after.

In the second quarter, Greencastle extended its lead when Faust drove the ball two-yards into the end zone, giving Greencastle a 20-0 lead at the half.

The Greencastle defense had a monster half; holding the Cadets to 12 total yards in the first half.

In the second half, the defense continued to play strong as Anthony Brown caused Cascade's Ozy Riley to fumble on the Cadets opening drive.

The Greencastle crowd roared to life when the Tiger Cub defense was hit with two quick penalties inside the 15, giving the Cadets two first downs. Cascade scored one play later when Guthrie connected with Elliott Lane on an 11-yard pass.

The Tiger Cubs responded on the next possession, grinding it on the ground but ended the drive in the air.

Evens received a Shuee pass and proceeded to slash his way through the Cadet defense en route to a 40-yard touchdown.

Greencastle continued to press Cascade and scored a field goal on its next possession, then Jordan Hickam ignited the GHS crowd one last time.

Jordan Hickam runs in a 67-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Hickam, who replaced Shuee behind center, called his own number and disappeared into a crowd of Cadet defenders before busting through and leaving the Cascade defense in his wake. Hickam scorched Cascade for a 67-yard touchdown and gave the Tiger Cubs their last score of the night.

Meyer talked up his defense after the contest and noted their importance in grabbing the victory.

"Defensively, I thought we played very well," Meyer commented. "That's what really helped. They weren't able to run the ball much. I was very happy for our guys. We ran the ball and we stopped the run and those are things we keep talking about,"

With one game left in the regular season, Meyer acknowledged some areas he would like to see improvement, but likes where his team is.

"We had three or four turnovers. We had some bad penalties that we didn't need to have. Tighten up those things and we're a pretty good football team right now," Meyer concluded.

Greencastle will visit the Owen Valley Patriots at 7 p.m. Friday.
