When two struggling ballclubs face each other, something's got to give. On Saturday evening, Greencastle was able to take advantage of North Putnam's poor shooting performance, as the Tiger Cubs won the consolation tilt of the 2007 Putnam County Championship, 41-30.

Becky Grivas led a very balanced Greencastle scoring attack with 9 points, while Hannah Spencer added 7. Every Tiger Cub player scored in the contest. Shawna Johnston led the Cougar attack with her game-high 11 points.

After North Putnam held a brief 7-4 lead early in the game,

Greencastle went on an 18-1 run that covered nearly 10 minutes of play to go into intermission with a 22-8 advantage. Contributing to the Cougar offensive woes were a paltry 3-21 effort from the field, and the lack of an inside presence due to Johnston and Taylor Alles spending much of the first half on the bench with foul trouble.

The Cubs meanwhile were sparked by Spencer's aggressive play, which effectively limited any second chance opportunities for North Putnam as well as Grivas's 3-5 effort from the field.

North Putnam outscored Greencastle 22-19 in the second half, but the deficit proved to be insurmountable, and the Cougars never made a serious run at the Tiger Cubs.

North Putnam coach Kevin Smith was obviously disappointed with his team's inability to put together a cohesive ballgame at both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.

"We score 61 last night, and only give up 41 tonight. You would think that would be good enough to get a win."

Greencastle will host Tri-West at 8 p.m. next Tuesday, while Cloverdale will travel to Rockville at 6 p.m. Thursday Nov. 29.
