Luminarias light up community

Sunday, December 2, 2007

The annual 5,000 Lights Luminaria display on the DePauw University campus, coordinated by the Bonner Scholars Program, will be Tuesday evening Dec. 4.

This year's event is a true community-wide celebration, as it will coincide with the Greencastle Civic League's "Lights of Love" program on the downtown square. The soy-based votive candles used in the luminaria were handmade by DePauw retiree Bonnie Crawley, and sand was provided by Headley Hardware.

Each year, the DePauw Bonner Scholars Program recruits various campus groups to set up and light luminaries on the day of the event. Groups including Hartman House Civic Interns, First-year mentor groups, campus media outlets such as D3TV, living units, and Greek organizations are helping to keep this beloved campus tradition alive.

The Lights of Love program at begins at 6:30 p.m. in the courthouse rotunda. The luminaria display will begin at approximately 6 p.m.

Local residents are encouraged to drive through campus on their way to and from the Lights of Love program to see the campus aglow in candlelight.
