Olive M. "Peg" Smaltz, 86, formerly of Greencastle, died early Wednesday morning at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin.

Born in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Howard C. and Grace O'Hair Dean.

She graduated from Greencastle High School and the American College of Fashion Design in Chicago. Her lifelong career revolved around professional sewing teaching, tailoring and dressmaking. In addition, she was a housemother for the ATO fraternity and receptionist at Hogate Hall at DePauw University.

Survivors include her five children, Sue Burrus, Seattle, Carol Snyder, East Aurora, NY, David Smaltz and wife Robyn, Greenwood, Judy Fricke and husband George, Collierville, Tenn., Jan Yandell and husband Jim, Cleveland, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her siblings Virginia Brann, Howard Dean Jr., Benjamin Dean and her husband, Hubert Jacob Smaltz.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Franklin United Methodist Community. As she wished, her body was donated to the Indiana University Medical School for research and teaching.

Grinsteiner Funeral Home, Indianapolis, is handling arrangements.
