The first baby of 2008 for Putnam County arrived on the first afternoon of the new year.

Deagon Anthony Buis weighed in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces and was 20.5 inches long when he arrived at 2:53 p.m. at Putnam County Hospital.

He is he son of Chelsa Leigh Cook and Anthony Phillip Buis, Roachdale, and is the couple's first child.

Deagon arrived earlier than expected, and a lot quicker than many first deliveries. His due day was Jan. 9, but Chelsa started feeling the first signs of labor in the middle of the night. By the time she arrived at the hospital, the infant was well on his way and was delivered by Dr. C.Y. Ho.

Luckily, Chelsa had already been "nesting for a few days," getting her home ready for the new arrival. She had packed her son's baby diaper bag the night before she went into labor.

Chelsa is the daughter of Joe and Cheryl Cook, Roachdale. She is employed at Wal-Mart in Crawfordsville, and is also on leave from Putnam County Comprehensive Services.

Anthony is the son of Phil and Monice Buis, Greencastle. He is employed at Operation Life ambulance service.

Tuesday afternoon at the hospital, the new little family was surrounded by relatives and friends.

Lacey Bumgardner, who has been friends with Chelsa since sixth grade, shared in holding the cooing infant. Incidentally, Bumgardner is due to deliver a daughter on Jan. 8. She and Chelsa both found out they were pregnant on the same day.

While Deagon is the fifth grandchild for grandmother Monice, new grandmother Cheryl said she was thrilled to welcome her first grandchild.

"I wanted to b a grandma for a long time, but I wasn't pushing it," Cook said.
