Guy Albert Hughes, 88, Brazil, died Sunday at his residence.

Born in Clay County, he was the son of John Albert Hughes and Rachel Ellen (Buckle) Hughes.

He attended Wools School and Staunton High School where he played basketball and graduated in 1939.

As a boy and young adult, he worked in the family apple orchard and eventually took over the ownership of Hughes Apple Orchard. He was also a farmer and a welder at Amax. He was a member of Berea Christian Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent, deacon and teacher

On May 10, 1942, he was united in marriage to Marian Elizabeth Buchholz. She died in 1987.

Surviving are three children, Charlotte and Willard Hayes, Howard and Katrina Hughes, Leah and Martin Schuch; brother Gayle Hughes and wife Lois; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Joe Hughes in 2004, sister Betty Hughes, and sister Nina Pierce.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Lawson-Miller Chapel, Brazil, with Pastor Rick Wetnight officiating.

Burial will follow in Clearview Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, and prior to services Friday.
