Three-year-old Ella Halloran (left) gets help from her mom Landi Halloran on making a new year's flag from Vietnam, as her brother, 9-year-old Bradley Halloran, jots down his wishes for the new year at the Putnam County Library Monday. The Hallorans, of Greencastle, took part in a special unit called "New Year's Around the World," in which they learned how children in other countries celebrate the new year. Children in Vietnam write wishes on red paper and hang them around New Year's Day each year.?See page 3A for more pictures from the event.

Greencastle youngsters Chance Green, 6, and Kylee Green, 11, learn the art of making paper fortunes, which are inspired by Chinese culture, from Sasha Nemchonok at the Putnam County Library Monday. They were among several children who took part in a special unit called "New Year's Around the World," which teaches children how the new year is recognized around the world.
Greencastle youngster Joey Masters, 10, writes a note to his parents Sharon and Rick Masters and decorates it with stamps, much like children in Belgium do to celebrate New Year's in their country. Several children took part in the program, called "New Year's Around the World," at the Putnam County Library on Monday and learned how various cultures around the world celebrate the new year.
