Sectional opens at South Putnam tonight

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Although three of the four Putnam County schools are off until tomorrow evening, boys' sectional basketball opens tonight around the state with action starting at the South Putnam Class 2A Sectional 46.

The 6 p.m. opener features two out-of-county schools, but it should be an exciting game for any basketball fan to watch. Covenant Christian (13-6) will take on Monrovia (14-7) in what promises to be a good match-up.

As the only two schools in the sectional with winning records, the two squads had the misfortune of drawing one another in the opener, but the game should provide a nice tip-off to the week's action.

After game one, Cloverdale (8-13) will take on Speedway (4-14) at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Although the Sparkplugs beat the Clovers 58-51 on Feb. 1, they come into the tournament reeling, having lost three straight since facing Cloverdale.

For their part, the Clovers rebounded from a four-game skid on Saturday afternoon with a 62-55 come-from-behind win at Eminence.

Tomorrow night, the host Eagles (4-16) will battle Tri-West (8-12) at 6 p.m. Following that, North Putnam (1-19) takes on Cascade (5-15) around 7:30 p.m.

Although Greencastle also not open sectional play until tomorrow, Edgewood's 3A Sectional will open tonight at 7:30 p.m. when Owen Valley (14-8) meets Sullivan (6-16).

In tomorrow's action, South Vermillion (5-16) faces West Vigo (10-10) at 6 p.m. At approximately 7:30 p.m., Greencastle (10-9) will face the host Mustangs (20-2).
