Thursday, March 20, 2008

Carol Weisman, an internationally-known speaker, author, trainer and expert on board governance, volunteerism and fundraising, will present a workshop in Greencastle on March 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Walden Inn, with lunch included.

The workshop is titled "Board Recruiting and Orientation" and is sponsored by the Putnam County Community Foundation and F.C. Tucker/Schneider Realty.

Weisman will teach attendees how to recruit top-notch board members for their organizations and properly orient them so they have a meaningful service experience and help accomplish the mission. Participants will learn how to keep things fresh within the board, while maintaining stability. Weisman will show attendees where to look for board members and what to look for when searching for the right ones.

Weisman is the current president of Board Builders Inc. She has served on 29 boards and has led seven of them as board president. She has published extensively on volunteerism and governance and is also the author of "Raising Charitable Children," "Secrets of Successful Boards: The Best from the Nonprofit Pros," "Build a Better Board in 30 Days: A Guide for Busy Trustees," "Secrets of Successful Retreats," and "Secrets of Successful Fundraising," which is the first nonprofit management book ever to be selected by The Book of the Month Club. Weisman won a Telly Award for her PBS special "Building a Board with a Passion for Mission."

This workshop is one of many in the Putnam County Community Foundation's Learning Series, which is held on the fourth Monday of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Walden Inn.

Topics range from fundraising and marketing to strategic planning and board governance. The cost is $10 for each person and includes lunch and training materials. To register for this workshop and get information on upcoming events, contact Eric Wolfe at ewolfe@pcfoundation.org or 1-866-653-4978.

  • Maybe she can make a "special" appearance in Cloverdale! She will need more than a 3 hour seminar, perhaps summer school.
