ELLETTSVILLE -- The Greencastle softball team was defeated by 11th-ranked Edgewood 12-2 on Thursday.

"We have to be at the top of our game and play mistake-free ball for seven innings against an opponent of that caliber," GHS coach Dave Keller said.

Greencastle scored both of its runs in the top of the fourth but the Mustangs were too much for the Tiger Cubs to overcome. Edgewood collected 14 hits on the night.

Cassie Alspaugh, Mallory Miller, Sarah Land, Briana Baker and Veronica Sawyer accounted for Greencastle's five hits. Land and Sawyer recorded RBI for GHS.

GHS used three pitchers, Baker, Alspaugh and Miller, with Baker picking up the loss.

"We will learn a lot more from a loss like this than if we were to win a game like this," Keller said. "I saw bright spots in play of some of the girls last night but we were kind of shell shocked after the first couple of innings and we were fighting an uphill battle."

With a possible showdown against the Mustangs come sectional time, Keller believes that his Tiger Cubs can use the loss as a measuring stick.

"With Edgewood being in our sectional, we know where we need to be in a couple of months, and we will make every effort to improve as a group," he said.

The Tiger Cubs will host Eminence at noon today.
