Woman airlifted following Sunday crash

Monday, April 7, 2008

Alcohol may have been a factor in a Sunday evening crash that led to a Putnam County woman being airlifted to the hospital.

Putnam County Sheriff's Deputy Gregg Slover said a Ford Ranger lost control and slid down a ravine near the intersection of CR 525 West and CR 175 North shortly before 8 p.m.

A passenger in the truck, 20-year-old Brittney Vaughn was partially ejected through a window and sustained injury to her arm. Deputy Slover said he thought the helicopter took Vaughn to an Indianapolis hospital but that her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Meanwhile the driver of the truck, Ben Reese, age unknown, was taken to the Putnam County Jail to be tested for alcohol.

"There was a smell of alcohol in the vehicle," Slover told the BannerGraphic after working the crash.

A third person in the truck, Bradley Vaughn, was not injured, Slover said.

Passers by the accident stopped and helped the three accident victims climb from the truck that had slid nose-first down the embankment and came to rest in a small creek. Madison Township Fire was also at the scene.
