North Putnam students encouraged to give back

Friday, April 18, 2008

North Putnam Middle School students will be taking part in a supply drive for the Putnam County Humane Society April 21-25.

The drive is sponsored by the DePauw University Hartman House as a part of National Youth Service Day. The supply drive will involve the youth of the community in a helpful way for the Humane Society of Putnam County.

National Youth Service Day is a way to help the youth of the world understand their importance in society and that youth volunteerism is needed and valued.

Supplies that are needed by the Humane Society include cat and dog food, cleaning supplies, office supplies, blankets, plastic storage containers, and metal garbage containers, among other items.

The kickoff event for the supply drive will take place during school today with an educational presentation about NYSD and the Humane Society.

The students will be challenged to bring in as many supplies as they can the following week. At the end of the week, the winning Focus class from each grade will be determined.

There will also be an opportunity for the middle school students and their families to get involved in volunteering at the Humane Society of Putnam County on Saturday, April 26 from noon to 1 p.m. Students will be able to walk dogs and help with other work around the facility.

This event is coordinated by Hartman House Civic Interns Kayla Green, a North Putnam High School senior, and Kate Ziegelgruber, a DPU senior.
