Tiger Cub golfers drop close match with Braves

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

TERRE HAUTE -- The Greencastle boys' golf team lost a hard fought battle with Terre Haute South Monday night, losing 147-157 on the road.

In a reversal of Saturday, senior Eric Davis took command of his game and carded a 38 to lead the GHS team.

"It was nice to see Eric take the leadership role again," GHS head coach Donovan Wheeler said. "Especially since he still struggled with his swing execution at times. But the difference between today and Saturday is that he made getting the ball into the hole his top priority.

"I know it sounds a little silly and somewhat obvious, but it's really a matter of mentality for him. Today, he competed -- that simple."

Wade Huber put in another nice score together, shooting a 39 along with Nick Pritchard. Freshman Jim Wheeler closed out Greencastle's scoring with a 41.

"I was also pleased to see Wade, Nick, and Jimmy fight for their shots as well. They also struggled out there, but they finally decided they weren't going to let the circumstances control them," Wheeler said.

Luke Crimmins and Jacob Collins each scored 44 to round out the varsity players.

In junior varsity action, Greencastle fell to the Braves 167-218.

Tyler Hopkins and Seth Miller led the way by shooting 50, while Tyler Wade came in with a 56. Walter Chiarella shot a 62, Clark Wilson a 67 and J.T. Hennette shot a 69.

"I think we're finally remembering how we used to score last year," Wheeler said. "Nothing came easily, but we didn't care, and tonight we've remembered that it really doesn't matter what the ball looks like after you hit. All that matters is how many times you've hit by the time you pick it up out of the tiny, little hole."
