Two high school seniors will be offered scholarships

For the last six years, the Greencastle Chamber of Commerce has offered two senior high school students "Athlete of the Year" awards to area youth.

This year a $250 scholarship for two years has been added to the award and is sponsored by First National Bank.

The award has been presented by the Chamber as a plaque for the past five years at either the Senior Awards Banquet or Spring Athletic Banquet.

"We've always been very proud of the award," said Greencastle Chamber Director Tammy Amor.

"Everything costs so much in the day and age so every little bit helps. We are very thankful to First National Bank for making this a monetary award," she added.

Bank Vice President Ken Heeke said, "This is a county-wide scholarship, and First National Bank wants to show their commitment to students in the county. We help sponsor the athlete of the week now. This is another way we can help them attain their goals. We believe education is that important."

A team from each school, consisting of the school athletic director, principal and coaches, will choose nominees for the award. Nominations will be made according to grade point average (25 percent), athletic prowess (50 percent) and personal character (25 percent).

"Generally you have to have a pretty high GPA to qualify. Most of the past winners have had at least a 3.5 average," said Amor. "It also helps to have extracurricular activities like 4-H, school clubs, church or community involvements."

Amor added, "Most of the past recipients have been really well-rounded individuals."

Students interested in the scholarship should see their school athletic director.
