Tiger Cub comeback falls short

Thursday, May 1, 2008

After a bad start to their game with Monrovia Wednesday night, the Greencastle baseball team was almost able to complete a comeback on Monrovia. However, the Tiger Cubs fell to the visiting Bulldogs, 8-7.

Jeremy Hayden makes a throw to first base in the second inning of Wednesday's loss to Monrovia.

A rough second inning did the Tiger Cubs (3-11, 305 WCC) in, as they allowed six runs on four hits, two errors, a walk and a passed ball in the frame. Starter Kendall Faust lasted just one-and-a-third inning, having allowed seven runs on five hits and a walk.

From there, though, freshman reliever Keegan Remsburg came in and stopped the bleeding for GHS, allowing just one run on four hits and a walk in four-and-two-thirds.

Remsburg's relief made it possible for the Tiger Cub offense to get the team back in the game.

Kyle Nobles opened up the Tiger Cub scoring in the first with an RBI single.

GHS was on the attack again in the second when Monrovia centerfielder Robert Martin dropped a fly ball off the bat of Blake Robinson. Robinson made it to third on the play. Trey Ford then singled to drive in Robinson.

The scenario repeated itself exactly in the fourth. Martin dropped a ball, Robinson got to third and Ford Drove him in.

The Cubs' big inning came in the fifth, though. Graham Shuee hit a two-run double, driving in Nobles and Jeremy Hayden. Two batters later, Robinson drove in Shuee.

The Tiger Cubs were down just two after five innings.

GHS missed a big opportunity in the sixth, though. Nobles hit a one-out triple to get things started. Kendall Faust then singled to drive him in. After a Hayden double, GHS had runners at second and third with just one out.

Unfortunately, the next two batters went down with a strikeout and a fly out.

Missed opportunities were the theme of the night for GHS, though. The left 10 runners on base Wednesday, nine of them in scoring position. They also committed five errors.

Asked what his team needed to do to get over the hump, GHS coach Troy Greenlee said they needed to "not make the hump in the first place." The coach added that the beginnings of games have plagued his team all year long.

In the seventh, the Cubs got one base runner, but ultimately made the last out on a pop-up to the shortstop.

Nobles had an excellent night at the plate for GHS, going 4-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. The last out came with him on deck, a fact that Greenlee noted as another missed opportunity.

Shuee drove in a pair of runs, as did Ford, who went 3-for-4 after starting the game on the bench.

Logan Stewart pitched a complete game for Monrovia to pick up the win, allowing seven runs on 13 hits and a walk. He struck out eight Tiger Cubs.

Remsburg took the hard-luck loss for GHS. While his relief appearance kept the Cubs in the game, the one run he allowed in the fourth inning made the difference.
