Arbor Day Foundation offering 10 trees for 10 bucks

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

With the recent renaming of Greencastle as a Tree City, an addition to the beautification can be made personally.

The Arbor Day Foundation is sending out 10 trees for a membership price of $10 for anyone who joins before May 15. The 10 trees can be any number of flowering trees, oaks, spruces, dogwoods or any variation.

"These compact flowering trees were selected for planting in large or small spaces," said John Rosenow, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.

"They will give your home in Indiana the lovely pink, white and yellow flowers and provide winter berries and nesting sites for songbirds."

The free trees are part of the non-profit foundation's Trees for America campaign.

According to the Arbor Day Foundation's website, "The Trees for America program is based upon the Arbor Day Foundation's belief that each of us has a responsibility for wise environmental stewardship. Each year the Foundation distributes millions of trees, fosters tree-care education, and works to help reforest thousands of fire-ravaged acres in our National Forests."

Indiana falls in Zones 5-6 of the Arbor Day Foundation's hardiness zone. On their site they have trees that are best suited for this zone as well as how to best insure their ability to grow and thrive.

The tree planting season ends May 31. Therefore, all trees must be ordered by May 15 in order to receive them in time to plant.

The trees will be shipped postpaid with planting instructions. They are shipped at between 6 -- 12 inches and are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced for free.

To become a member of the foundation and to receive the free trees, visit their website at http://www.arborday.org. Once on the homepage, click on "10 Free Trees" under the shop column.
