Clover golf picks up win at Deer Creek

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

CLAYTON -- In a match that saw both teams suffer a bit of a hangover from Saturday's WCC Golf Meet, Cloverdale defeated Cascade 173-181 Monday at Deer Creek.

I think that both teams had a little post-conference let down," said Clover coach Doug Wokoun. "Historically, I don't think either of us plays very well in this match, coming the Monday after the conference tournament. Everyone seemed to have some struggles, and a little lack of focus. I think (Cascade's) Coach Smyth and I were both a little disappointed in this match.

Chris Arnold led the Clovers and claimed medalist, firing a 41. Michael Glassburn was just behind at 42. Sean Rhine added a 44 and Mike Wellington had a 46.

"Chris played pretty well, but had some difficulties on the greens," Wokouns commented. "Michael, Sean and Mike all had some problems that were not part of the round Saturday."

In the junior varsity match, Cascade edged the Clovers 223-225. Blake Witt led the Clover JV with a 52.

The task for Cloverdale is now to get right back into it. They have three matches this week, including tonight at Turkey Run.

"We need to regroup a little bit and be prepared," Wokoun said.

"Turkey Run is a well-coached team and has everyone back from a team that qualified for the regional last year," he continued. "The course at Turkey Run is somewhat unique and will provide some different challenges for us. We need to get back to the progress we were making before last week."

The Clovers visit the Warriors at 4:45 p.m. today.
