Hickory Creek kicks off Nursing Home Week

Doris Hicks and Hameta Crooks, residents at Hickory Creek at Sunset, get ready to let their balloons fly during the nursing facilities kick-off for National Nursing Home Week. The balloons have messages telling anyone finding them where they came from and to call Sunset.

Hickory Creek at Sunset Administrator Gayle Camonte watched with a smile as Mayor Sue Murray signed a proclamation announcing May 11-17 for National Nursing Home Week at Hickory Creek at Sunset Monday.

The proclamation states that the community's citizens now residing in nursing homes have contributed "immeasurable to Greencastle's heritage over the years."

It also says that "these same residents are living history," and recognizes Hickory Creek at Sunset along with member facilities of the Indiana Association of Homes & Services for the Aging for sponsoring events all week long.

Gangsters Amber Gaddis and Lisa Dodson tie up 1920s flapper Jennifer Evans during a railroad heist as part of the entertainment during Hickory Creek at Sunset's first day of National Nursing Home Week. Mayor Sue Murray saved Evans, who is the nursing facilities Supervisor of Housekeeping and Laundry, from Gadis (Office Manager) and Dodson (Activities Director).

The proclamation encourages people to visit local nursing homes and recognizes the high quality of care provided to residents who live in those homes.

Sunset kicked off the week with a balloon liftoff and Roaring Twenties theme on Monday followed by the signing of the proclamation by the mayor.

Sunset's residents look forward every year to the week-long event.

"The first thing anybody asked today was what are we going to do?" revealed Activity Director Lisa Dodson.

"Our theme is Love is Ageless and we are doing something to celebrate a different decade everyday. Today is 1920s, which explains why we are dressed like flappers and gangsters," laughed Dodson.

Tomorrow the facility will have a 1950s sock hop and dance contest at 6 p.m. They will also have a cookout to which the public is invited.

Wednesday and Thursday will feature events from the 1960s and 70s.

For information about any of the events, call Hickory Creek at Sunset at 765-653-3143.
