GHS softball defeats Patriots in extra innings at home

Friday, May 16, 2008

The Greencastle softball team ended its regular season with a win over visiting Owen Valley Thursday. GHS won 4-3 in eight innings and ended the season at 14-8.

Greencastle had a flair for the dramatic Thursday. They trailed entering the sixth inning, where they scored to ultimately force the game into extra innings.

Junior catcher Cassie Alspaugh played the role of gunslinger to perfection for the Tiger Cubs. In the top of the eighth, the Patriots saw two of their runners gunned down by Alspaugh on consecutive steal attempts.

Winning pitcher Mallory Miller got things going in the bottom of the eighth. She was replaced on the bases by Tennille Burgeson. Burgeson advanced to third after a past ball, and then was brought home after a Veronica Sawyer infield hit to win the game.

Miller threw the final five innings with four strikeouts, three hits and one walk.

The Tiger Cubs had three players collect multiple hits on the night. Hannah Spencer, Cassie Alspaugh and Miller accounted for those multiple hits.

"It was our senior night, so it was nice that the seniors got to go out on their home field and have a good memory," GHS head coach Dave Keller said. "Hopefully, they will have good memories of this season."

Keller acknowledged it was a good season for the Tiger Cubs but now it's time to prepare for the post-season. Keller moved some people around and got some younger players some valuable varsity experience he hopes will benefit them in the long run.

"It was a good year, now we'll put all our attention to Edgewood," Keller said. "I wanted to see some things tonight and we got some people good playing time tonight. We're pleased with the outcome tonight.

"Its a sectional opponent, so we don't want to show all of our cards in a regular season game at the end of the year and don't want to get anyone hurt," Keller concluded.

The GHS junior varsity lost to the Mustangs 7-6. Jordyn Lewis had a triple for the Tiger Cubs, while Burgeson and Kayla Downing added two hits each. Downing was dealt the loss.

Greencastle will face Edgewood in the second game of Tuesday's action at the South Vermillion Sectional.
