MITCHEL

John Darrel Mitchel, 75, of rural Brazil, passed away at 5:50 a.m. Sunday June 1, 2008 at St. Vincent Clay Hospital of an apparent heart attack.

He was born in Clay City, Feb. 19, 1933 to Howard J. and Thelma (Derdorf) Mitchel.

Following high school he joined the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. After returning from the military he began working for Lone Star Cement and retired after 40 years of employment.

March 19, 1960 he married Altha Bryant. He enjoyed watching or listening to NASCAR, fishing, gardening, traveling and spending time with his family, especially his grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Kenneth, Wayne and Ray.

Survivors include his wife, son and daughter in law Tom and Amy Mitchel; grandsons Jeramie and Derik Mitchel; brother Carl Mitchel and sister Dolores Burnsworth both of Kokomo, Ind.

Services will be at French Funeral Home Thursday, June 5, 2008 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Becknell officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Clay City.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 4-8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riley Childrens Hospital or St. Judes Hospital, envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
