July is National Ice Cream Month. That's right, a whole month dedicated to celebrating one of the greatest culinary inventions ever created.

In fact, it's so great, say ice cream specialists from the Ice Cream Journal, "that when sliced bread was invented everyone called it the best thing since ice cream."

The icy confection, as we know it today, appears to have originated in France around the 17th century. The first ice cream parlor was established in 1776 in New York City. But it was not the ice cream we know today, which is generally made with one pound of cream and 5.8 pounds of whole milk for one gallon of ice cream. Today ice cream is considered an $11 billion retail industry.

Ice cream is a favorite subject around Putnam County regardless of what time of year it is.

A poll of local ice cream connoisseurs showed that chocolate is a favorite but only by a small percentage. Vanilla is a close second with butter pecan, chocolate chip and cookie dough alternating for third place.

Workers at City Hall in Greencastle love ice cream. Melanie Welker's favorite flavor is mint chocolate chip while Joyce Green loves vanilla.

A quick poll around the newsroom at the Banner Graphic showed chocolate as the favorite by a very slim margin. There was no second place favorite here with choices being as diverse as the people who work here.

Favorites include pistachio, butter pecan, strawberry, chocolate marshmallow chocolate chip mint and even a rainbow sherbet.

A poll of 14 kids at the Aquatic Center showed chocolate a definite favorite followed by vanilla and chocolate chip. Chocolate outdistanced vanilla by two to one with this group.

But what does your ice cream flavor choice say about you? According to icecream.com your choice in ice cream is just as important as your birth sign.

For instance if butter pecan is your flavor, you are most likely a perfect worker who is devoted, conscientious and respectful. You are mostly romantically compatible with those who love mint chocolate chip.

Those of you who love chocolate chip are competitive and accomplished as well as generous with your time and money. You get along best with butter pecaners and double chocolate chunckers. If you are a coffee (ice cream) lover, you are lively, dramatic and flirtatious. You work best with those who love strawberry.
You double chocolate chunk types are the life of the party, charming everyone with your enthusiasm and sense of style. You prefer your love mates to be butter pecaners or chocolate chippers.
If rocky road is your flavor you enjoy being catered to and appreciate the finer things in life. You are most compatible with other rocky road fans.
A love of strawberry reveals a thoughtful, logical person who is more of a follower than a leader. You get along best with other strawberries, rocky roaders, mint chocolate chippers and vanilla lovers.

There is nothing plain about vanilla. If you love vanilla, you are colorful, dramatic and a risk taker who relies more on intuition than logic. Your perfect match is a rocky road lover.

It doesn't really matter what flavor you are. Kids of all ages feel the same. Local resident Rick Greene said it all, "I just love ice cream, and I don't care what flavor. I love them all."
