City block much nicer, thanks to clean-up

To the editor:

In the 1940s and early 1950s, ladies did not walk on the north side of Franklin Street between Jackson Street and Indiana Street. There were two taverns and two liquor stores within this block. One of the liquor stores had a large painting of a nude lady over the bar. There was a third tavern at the southeast corner of the block. Several of the buildings were in a state of disrepair.

All in all, the block was intimidating.

Fast forward to July 2008. Today, this block presents a most delightful streetscape. Thanks to the county council, county commissioners, Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, Greencastle Civic League, Main Street Greencastle, professional community, property owners, merchants and many others, the block is beautiful and most inviting. The planters are full of beautiful flowers and vines. The table and chairs in front of Almost Home are irresistible. The horse in front of Dave Murray and Associates adds just the correct amount of joyful color. The Senior Center always welcomes one and all.

Greencastle and Putnam County are fortunate to have so many caring people.
