Suicide attempt thwarted

Saturday, August 30, 2008

A Hendricks Country woman found her way to a Putnam County lake before attempting to kill herself.

Friday morning a call came into Putnam County 911 about an abandoned car near the boat ramp at Van Bibber Lake.

Upon further inspection, it was noticed that the car had valuables signifying that the owner must be nearby.

When the Sheriff's Department arrived, a woman was located in the water that up to her neck. Officials realized the woman was still alive before they could fish her out of the water after she opened her eyes.

"It's safe to say that this was an attempted suicide. Once we realized the woman was alive and got care for her, our involvement pretty well terminated," said Detective Pat McFadden. "There was no criminal activity."

The woman was transported to Hendricks Community Hospital in Danville.

At this time, the woman's identity has not been released and her injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

  • I don't think that suicide and attempted suicide are illegal in the United States. Assisted suicide is illegal. Indiana has a law which specifically prohibits assisted suicide, Ind. Code Ann. §35-42-1-2.5, but I can find nothing on suicide or attempted suicide.

  • Well I think cloverlady's "point" is pretty self evident. I guess you DID miss miss something, skittlebug. "There was no criminal activity."

  • Sometimes I think people who put respond to news by this forman are either very cold hearted, or just don't have anything better to do. You should be thinking about the poor lady who, for reasons maybe only she knew, felt she couldn't handle life and this was her only way out. What we should all be doing is saying a prayer for her and hope she can get some help. No, I do not know who this person is. I just think the comments here are very stupid and uncalled for!

  • Amen brother interested party, you people don't know this woman's situation so use that old saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say, shut your piehole".

  • For anyone who thinks that Suicide is the answer- there are people who can help. You are truly not alone in this world. There are other answers.

  • I know that this will most likely not be read, and that is ok. I happened to find this article a year or so after it was written.

Dear interested party and hellomcfly, thank you. I was in an extraordinarily dark place from which I could not bring myself out of. Thank you for your kind words and prayers. I did get the help I so desperately needed. It took a while, but there is color and light in the world again.

And, yes, this woman's sister.... I do see now that I was not alone and that there were other answers. But at the time I could not see them. No matter how hard I tried. ;)

And I have to say, never underestimate tower of sincere kindness and compassion. The officer that pulled me out of that water will always be my guardian angel. His kindness and compassion gave me the spark of hope I needed to try. I have written to Detective McFadden to thank him and just to let him know I was ok and that he will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Again, thank you for your kind words so long ago.
