Tiger Cubs win big over Wildcats
It didn't take long for Greencastle to seize an advantage in its girls' soccer matchup with South Vermillion. The Tiger Cubs grabbed some early momentum and rolled to a 12-0 win over the Wildcats Tuesday.
Greencastle jumped on the Wildcats early and had three players record hat tricks in the win. The margin allowed the Tiger Cubs to work on some fundamentals against a full squad, which should serve them well.
"We played decent possession ball," GHS head coach Maurice McKee said. "We've been working on getting our passes down still. The last part of the last half, they were doing some good possession passing. I was really pleased with them."
Greencastle scored less than five minutes into the contest when Whitney Brotherton knocked in a goal to put Greencastle on the board. Brotherton went on to score two more goals in the half.
At the 31:11 mark, Greencastle junior Laura English set up for a corner kick, which sailed to the front of the goal and was knocked in by South Vermillion's Page Russell.
Greencastle continued to press the Wildcats in the first half with good results. Hannah Serlin connected on a shot that rocketed off the senior's left foot and curved into the net, putting GHS up 5-0. Hannah Spencer and English added goals to close out the half.
In the second half, it was obvious the Tiger Cubs were working on elements of their game. Although they still set the nets ablaze, they concentrated on passing and putting the ball where it needed to be.
Spencer opened Greencastle's second half scoring with 28:29 on the clock. Serlin followed less than four minutes later. Spencer finished her hat trick as she poked a shot past the Wildcat's keeper with 23:26 remaining.
Hannah Deer scored at the 18:40 mark and Serlin ended the GHS scoring with her third goals of the evening with 10:28 remaining.
With the Wildcats behind them, Greencastle sets their sights on their Thursday matchup with Terre Haute North. Although his squad dominated both sides of the ball Tuesday, McKee still sees room for improvement.
"We're going to have to work on some stuff in practice tomorrow and get their mind set for their game on Thursday," McKee said. "It's not going to be as easy as it has been in the past with them. Terre Haute North has not had a dominant team in the past, but they are doing very well this year.
"They got a good select group of girls in right now, so we've got to try and be ready for them," McKee concluded.
Greencastle travels to Terre Haute North at 6 p.m. Thursday.
